AT THE ORIGIN, A PRACTICAL CLOTHING

The tailor takes its name from the men's dressmakers, who make men's suits. It consists of two pieces, cut from the same fabric: a long skirt and a matching jacket. Originally designed for horse riding, the tailor is gradually leaving the leisure world to become a day garment, especially worn in the morning. Its creation is attributed to John Redfern in 1885. If he had already been producing it for several years, it was on this date that the tailor crossed the Channel and was massively adopted in France.

In the 1950s, it was Christian Dior and Gabrielle Chanel who each delivered their interpretation of the women's suit: marked waist and long skirt for Dior, tweed and loose outfit for Chanel. Ten years later, Yves Saint Laurent surprised his world by offering women the first pantsuit, inspired by the male tuxedo, which immediately seduced Helmut Newton and Catherine Deneuve. It was not until the 1980s for the return of the skirt suit with the “Working girl” look popularized by Giorgio Armani and Thierry Mugler.
